Tired, Sore & Hoarse
I’m tired, sore and hoarse today… but it was worth it. After
seeing all the creative energy this weekend I’m excited to start new projects
and start working on SPACE 2015. I
couldn’t ask for a better community of friendly people enjoying our common love
for the comics medium. It keeps me going.
Thanks to all the exhibitors for making SPACE such a joy to
put on each year and everybody I sucked into doing panels which provided all the great
programming.
Also thanks to Nate Powell for allowing us an early look at
March Book Two before anybody else. Nate
and Ken Eppstein also deserve a hardy thanks for being troopers for singing the
night away and then getting up in a few hours to make us look good on local TV.
Thanks to Stang and the crew at the Laughing Ogre for the great
party Friday night and to Caitlin McGurk (the unstoppable force) and Kafe Kerouac for the comics reading and
karaoke after party on Saturday.
Thanks to all the people who came to see all the incredible work.
I‘d like to especially thank my wife, Kathy, my brother,
Ron, my son, Bob and Fate Spears for
running the show with me. (Check out the
great work Fate does with the Comic Book Connection Initiative https://www.facebook.com/CBCI.Cols
Hope everybody had a safe trip home and hope to see you all
again next year.

John Porcellino
John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino’s experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix and Map of My Heart, published in 2007/2009, offer a comprehensive overview of the zine's first sixty-one issues, while Thoreau at Walden (2008) is a poetic expression of the great philosopher’s experience and ideals. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, "John Porcellino's comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive."
Porcellino's work has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, and Korean. He currently lives in South Beloit, Illinois.
Nate Powell
From 1999 to 2009, he worked as a caregiver for adults with developmental disabilities. Powell began self-publishing comics in 1992 at age 14. He graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1996, briefly attended George Washington University in Washington, DC, and graduated from School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2000 after receiving the Outstanding Cartooning Student award and the Shakespeare & Company Books Self-Publishing Grant, with which he funded the first issue of Walkie Talkie. Powell lived intermittently in central Arkansas while calling East Lansing, Michigan, South Hadley Falls, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island home from 2001 to 2003. He settled in Bloomington, Indiana in early 2004.
His 2008 graphic novel Swallow Me Whole won the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Debut and Outstanding Artist, and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the Young Adult Fiction category. It received the 2009 Eisner Award for Best Original Graphic Novel, and was also nominated for Best Writer/Artist and Best Lettering.
In 2013 Top Shelf Productions published March, an autobiographical graphic novel trilogy about the life of civil rights leader and United States Congressman John Lewis, written by Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Powell.
Powell has worked on the graphic novel adaptation of Rick Riordan's The Heroes Of Olympus:The Lost Hero, while working on his own next book, entitled Cover and the short comics collection You Don't Say.

Scott & Jeffery Kraynak
'Animal
Crackers' is a mix of poetry and art, a creative effort by
the brothers Kraynak.
While Scott is primarily the artist, and Jeffrey is
primarily the
writer, to say that one wrote while the other illustrated would be a
gross
generalization. For our creativity has bridged the divide and neither half
would be as
good without the input from the other side.
The goal from
the start was to create something along the lines of an adult Dr.
Seuss book.
And to that end it was written in anapestic tetrameter, the poetic
meter most
often used by him. The illustrations were done in the same fashion
typically
employed by Scott with his other artwork, a style he has come to
term
'linelism'. At first glance it might seem child-friendly with all the pretty
little
animals. And what kid doesn't love animal crackers? But then you open it
and the truth
is revealed. This book is not for kids. It is brutal and vulgar and
not for the
faint of heart. But neither is what we're doing to the environment.
And that's the
point. Though if I may take a step back and recant a prior
statement,
this book IS for kids. They need to see what we're doing wrong. While
the change
needs to start with us, it must continue with them. They are the
future. They
are the unfortunate shoulders upon which our hopes reside. They are
not inheriting
the best of worlds, nor an!
easy one to
grow up in, but, as noted by Samuel Daniel, "by adversity are
wrought the
greatest works of admiration."
